How to Test your Pond Water
Hi, I am Patti the garden girl and today we are going to check the pH level of my pond here. It has been sitting for a few weeks and I just want to see where we are at.

I have here a fresh water test kit and it comes complete with a bunch of different tests. Right now I do not have any fish in here so what I want to do is I want to test just the Ph to see whether it is more alkaline or more acidic.

Okay, here is the key pH indicator solution, now what I have to do is I got to take this and now I am going to put three drops. Now, I got to cap it and then just shake it like this. That is already giving me a very, very blue reading, we are going to check this little color card and I am going to say that we are at 7.6.

The next thing we are going to do then since we got the highest reading is the high range indicator solution. This one I am going to put five drops. Now I am going to take my little color card here and put these together. Now, I think that is reading between a 7.4 and a 7.8 roughly.

Now what that exactly means is that my water is more alkaline than it is neutral of than it is acidic. This range right now is a great range for a lot of different types of fresh water fish.

I hope you all will go out and get your own kit and start testing your water, it is a great thing to do with children. I am sure you will be really surprise in how smart your kids actually are if you do get them to do this test with you. I am Patti Moreno the garden girl. Thanks for watching.

I’ve been a little busy this last week preparing for the ‘big’ ice storm, dealing with flickering electricity for three days during ad after the storm, ( trying to stay off the computers for fear of a power surge, even with protectors you can crash a system ) followed by the inevitable power outage, This time for only 39 ¾ hours. The next time we have a spare 0.00 we Are getting a generator. I knew there was a reason I had kept my old battery powered cassette player, We listened to episodes of “The Shadow”, Orson Wells’ “War of the Worlds” and “The Bickersons”. I miss old radio shows. They are so descriptive and allow your mind to really blossom. It was… Fun this time. We were prepared. 😀

My first choice was to photograph a man’s mustache (aka ‘cookie duster’ ). I did not cross pathes with one mustache clad man the day we were running around preparing for the ice storm, being icebound, this is my second choice.

COOKIES ARE EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN.!!! All the good ones contain sugar. Sugar is EVIL.
I paid dearly for That Pie at Thanksgiving. But boy oh boy was it worth it. There are times I would die for an Oreo double stuff.! And occasionally take the risk. Lol.
I allow myself two pieces of sweet a day. My own rules, no medical reason other than a book I read in 1974 called “Sugar Blues”.. That is when I took refined sugar out of my diet .
Surely you know by now, I’m going to have something extra for you.
You really should make time and read the second link. At least go there, mark it and come back to it another day. I have pulled a few key paragraphs and placed them below.
Sugar Blues
Sugar Blues is a book by William Dufty that was released in 1975 and became a commercial success. According to the publishers, over 1.6 million copies have been printed.
In the book, Dufty makes the case that sugar is an addictive drug, that it is extremely harmful to the human body, and that the sugar industry conspires to keep Americans addicted to sugar.
The book’s central argument is that a small dietary change, eliminating refined sugar, can make a huge difference in how good one is able to feel physically and mentally.
John Lennon was a strong supporter of the book.
Dufty compares sugar to opium, morphine, and heroin, and calls sugar companies "pushers". He blamed sugar for everything from acne and scurvy to bubonic plague.

One of the most powerful ‘Lobby’ groups in Washington is.
THE NUTRITION FOUNDATION INC,. a front organization for the leading sugar-pushing conglomerates in the food business, including the American Sugar Refining Company, Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, Curtis Candy Co., General Foods, General Mills, Nestlé Co., Pet Milk Co. and Sunshine Biscuits-about 45 such companies in all.

In the 1930s, a research dentist from Cleveland, Ohio, Dr Weston A. Price, traveled all over the world-from the lands of the remote Alaska to the South Sea Islands, from Africa to New Zealand. His Nutrition and Physical Degeneration: A Comparison of Primitive and Modern Diets and Their Effects, which is illustrated with hundreds of photographs, was first published in 1939.
Dr Price took the whole world as his laboratory. His devastating conclusion, recorded in horrifying detail in area after area, was simple. People who live under so-called backward primitive conditions had excellent teeth and wonderful general health. They ate natural, unrefined food from their own locale. As soon as refined, sugared foods were imported as a result of contact with "civilization", physical degeneration began in a way that was definitely observable within a single generation.
Any credibility the sugar pushers have is based on our ignorance of works like that of Dr Price. Sugar manufacturers keep trying, hoping and contributing generous research grants to colleges and universities; but the research laboratories never come up with anything solid the manufacturers can use. Invariably, the research results are bad news.

Dextrose, also called "corn sugar", is derived synthetically from starch. Fructose is fruit sugar. Maltose is malt sugar. Lactose is milk sugar. Sucrose is refined sugar made from sugar cane and sugar beet.

"Made from natural ingredients", the television sugar-pushers tell us about product after product. The word "from" is not accented on television. It should be. Even refined sugar is made from natural ingredients. There is nothing new about that. The natural ingredients are cane and beets. But that four-letter word "from" hardly suggests that 90 per cent of the cane and beet have been removed. Heroin, too, could be advertised as being made from natural ingredients. The opium poppy is as natural as the sugar beet. It’s what man does with it that tells the story.
If you want to avoid sugar in the supermarket, there is only one sure way. Don’t buy anything unless it says on the label prominently, in plain English: "No sugar added". Use of the word "carbohydrate" as a "scientific" word for sugar has become a standard defense strategy with sugar pushers and many of their medical apologists. It’s their security blanket.
One lump of sugar in your coffee after a sandwich is enough to turn your stomach into a fermenter. One soda with a hamburger is enough to turn your stomach into a still. Sugar on cereal-whether you buy it already sugared in a box or add it yourself-almost guarantees acid fermentation.

The average American consumes an astounding two pounds of sugar each week, which is not surprising considering that highly refined sugars in the forms of sucrose (table sugar), dextrose (corn sugar), and high-fructose corn syrup are being processed into so many foods such as BREAD, breakfast CEREALl, KETCHUP, MAYONNAISE, PEANUT BUTTER, SPAGETTI SAUCE, and a plethora of microwave meals.
An average American consumes147 pounds of sweeteners each year.
Monoglycerides used in some ice creams are a possible cancer causing agent in test animals.

ALL current research supports the above information.
Scary huh.

The Jaguar XK120 was a sports car manufactured by Jaguar between 1948 and 1954. It was the first post-war sports car from the marque, succeeding the SS 100 which ended production in 1940 with the start of the war in Britain. The XK120 was launched at the 1948 London Motor Show as a test bed and show vehicle to highlight the new Jaguar XK engine. The car caused a sensation, which persuaded William Lyons to put it into production as a standard model.
The first cars manufactured in 1948 and 1949 had hand built aluminum bodies on an ash frame. Jaguar built 240 of these alloy bodied cars prior to moving to a more mass production XK120 in order to meet the demand for this popular model. With the 1950 model year a production version had a steel pressed body with alloy doors, bonnet, and trunk skin. Other features included torsion bar front suspension, and a removable windscreen.
Power came from a dual overhead cam 3.4 L straight-6 engine, Jaguar’s famous XK engine. With an alloy cylinder head and twin side draft SU carburators, the XK engine was very advanced for a mass produced unit, developing 160 bhp with the standard 8:1 compression ratio. This same basic design of the XK engine was used in 3.8L and 4.2L versions into the late 1980s.
The XK120 name referred to the vehicle’s impressive 120 mph (193 km/h) top speed – even faster with the windscreen removed – and at the time of its launch it was the world’s fastest standard production car[1]. It was available as a coupe (FHC or Fixed Head Coupe, introduced in 1951), convertible (DHC or Drop Head Coupe, 1953), or the original roadster (OTS or Open Two Seater). An XK120 FHC can claim the only import win in NASCAR when it won NASCAR’s first road race at Linden Airport, New Jersey, June 13th, 1954 with Al Keller at the wheel. Earlier in the year, on 31 January / 1 February, an XK120 Coupe driven by Mrs D Anderson, Chas Swinburne and Bill Pitt had won the first 24 hour car race to be held in Australia, the 1954 Mt. Druitt 24 Hours Road Race.
The Roadster had a very light weight canvas top and removable side curtains screwed to the doors, which had no external handle – to open them you reached through the screen to pull a cord on the inside. It also had a removeable windscreen, which could be removed so that "aeroscreens" could be fitted. The DHC or Drop Head Coupe had a padded top and roll up windows. Both the FHC and DHC had an elegant wood veneer dash, whereas the roadster’s was leather. All models were manufactured with spats to cover the back wheel arch which enhanced the streamlined look, but when optional (from 1951) wire wheels were fitted, the spats had to be removed to make room for the hub spinners. There was also an M version (called SE for Special Equipment in England) which included increased power, stiffer suspension, dual exhaust, and wire wheels.

Taken for Active Assignment Weekly: Geometry in nature

Nature is usually something irregular, soft, unruly. But often we can find perfect geometrical shapes in it, e.g. triangles, squares, circles… I’d like you to capture those.

Restrictions: Don’t put the shape into the image through Photoshop or put two (or more) images together into one – it must be there naturally. All other PP activities are ok.

Dare: make it look as clean, "mathematical" as possible. With this I mean straight, clear lines, not the rugged, scraggly nature-look…

I hope I’m not being too confusing – I realise it’s one thing to think up an assignment and another one to state it in words… 😉

What it took
The perfect round shape of the lime fruit, and the nice, straight lines dividing it up into segments looked like they matched the assignment.

After a dozen test-drops where I got nice water droplets almost each time, I filled the glass with tonic water (imagining that the bubbles would look good… sadly they went off really quickly before I got a decent shot) and icecubes and stuck a slice of lime to the edge of the glass.

Flash to the left front of glass, camera aiming straight at glass. Short tele used to ensure camera would not be splashed. Camera triggered by what-cha-ma-callin’ (also known as Nikon ML-L3 remote) which I pressed sorta the same time as the icecube was hitting the tonic water surface. Background is a white sheet.

The successrate from the test drops had disappeared. Out of 20 drops, only this one came out with decent water drops.

Image recorded as raw. Opened once and white balance changed to "tungsten" to get the blue look. Then the same image opened again and the white balance this time set to "flash" to retain the colour of the lime. The two versions of the image then just overlaid in photoshop with a mask.

I don’t know what it is about Christmas lights that they work fine last year but you get them out of the box this year and half of them don’t light up. So, we bought a bunch of new lights this year and went with the high-tech LED version. They supposedly last longer and use less electricity, but I think you need to have them on non-stop for a decade before you save enough to pay for them. We were testing them on the living room floor before taking them outside to hang, so I figured one more holiday bokeh opportunity.
